I created a patch to do just what is requested here, and posted it to the issue report page for the buildnumber plugin several months ago:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MOJO-1061 Sadly, it doesn't appear currently that anyone is in charge of maintaining this plugin, it is a simple and obvious fix to add...
