Looks like this happens when referenced project has nothing in src/* folder. And maven-archetype-j2ee-simple creates such *incomplete* project :) However because new j2ee-simple has a set of projects it is quite tricky to make it working :( I recreated everything from scratch and it behaves muchmuch better. (the other problem with j2ee-simple is http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/ARCHETYPE-67)
