Do you have JUnit in your class path? In my pom.xml I have the following
dependency for the unit tests:
<dependencies>
...
<dependency>
<groupId>junit</groupId>
<artifactId>junit</artifactId>
<version>3.8.1</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
...
</dependencies>
