First, I think you should grab a copy of the book discussed on the mailing-list a couple of times. Check the Maven homepage for it. Second, the pregoal-stuff is no longer available in Maven. I think you want to discuss the life-cycle. For that, there's also a nice bit of documentation on the Maven-site.
