Thanks for the encouraging reply. Actually, after some thought, I am thinking
of creating a sub-directory under 'src/site/resources' and putting any adhoc
artifacts there, and then give a link to that sub-folder in site.xml so that a
link to it appears automatically in the output html and end users can browse it
to see the additional artifacts provided there.

your problem is half-resolved :)
the links are not automatically added, since there is no reason to create a
menu entry for each resource: you have to manually add menu entries in
site.xml [1]
