As Todd pointed out, the eclipse dependency view might not be that reliable. You are better of if you check this by command line. I dont get why the build would break. Do you create a jar depending on your util jar? If so, the build should not break, since by default a jar wouldn't assemble all dependencies. Or do you ultimately build a war/ear or something?
