That did it. In our pom.xml, we did not explicitly specify the version of
the maven-release-plugin. After adding the version tag to 2.2.1 I can now
run the release:prepare.
<plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-release-plugin</artifactId>
*<version>2.2.1</version>*
</plugin>
