Yes Barrie you're right. I've just realized that one of my tapestry
dependencies (tapestry-test) includes a hidden dependency to testng which
was the cause of my woes!!!!!!!!!

Have excluded the dependency as follows:
     <dependency>
            <groupId>org.apache.tapestry</groupId>
            <artifactId>tapestry-test</artifactId>
            <version>5.2.6</version>
            <scope>test</scope>
           * <exclusions>
                <exclusion>
                    <artifactId>testng</artifactId>
                    <groupId>org.testng</groupId>
                </exclusion>
            </exclusions>*
        </dependency>

sorted the problem!
