There are lots of open source projects out there where you can see the whole thing. Have a look at the Apache Archiva (repository manager) build: http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/archiva/trunk/ The hierarchy is much deeper here, but if you start at http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/archiva/trunk/archiva-modules/archiva-base/ you will see the pom.xml in that directory has <type>pom</type> and a list of <modules> that match the subdirectories.
