Thanks Arnaud, Wayne for your replies. Now I too have clear that I should use this repository manager, I don't think I should by ashamed of not knowing that before. Or should I? :-)

I feel a bit like having to install something like that on my laptop is overhead work that one nees to do just because a simpler solution for this M1 repo support in M3 doesn't exist, but I'll try it.
