New system with 1.2T drive. Has Windows 11 on it. Split the drive with

Trying to put f42 server on the free space. The installer options for
custom install won't enable. Only the automatic choice. Would typically
make three partitions boot, root and home.

How do I see the free space?
When Windows split the space, did it leave your second spare partition
as unused free space or did it set the partition up ready for Windows
to use straight away.

The latter is the usual cause of this problem, the Linux installer
wants free unused space. Unused by anything. An empty formatted
partition doesn't meet that criteria. Simply deleting that second
partition, without doing anything more than just deleting it, is
usually all that you need to do.

It doesn't show as being formatted or a partition.
