Just to be sure there was no unintended interaction by mod_dir I changed the rule from: RewriteRule ^(.*)index\.html$ $1 to: RewriteRule ^(.*)zoo\.bar$ $1 ...but it still adds zoo.bar back even after the match and rewrite.
