You have two things to look for in an author:
  - Do they *really* know the subject?  An author who is part of
    the core Apache team is likely to score high.
  - How well do they communicate to a newbie?  A professional
    author with lots of books published is probably doing
    something right.

Rich Bowen scores on both those tests, and also does newbie 
training, including the "introduction to apache" tutorial at
ApacheCon.  Worth a look at his books.

Someone also mentioned Ivan Ristic, who is also well-respected,
though not a core developer.  Couldn't say anything about other
individuals mentioned.
