@Stenten -- thanks, it was very helpful ! @Bryce Harrington -- I confirm that for IBM ThinkPad G41 ( 9.04 installs with no problem, Karmic was a complete disaster, Lucid hangs for both installer and LiveCD, but the incantation "i915.modeset=1" helps, and I suppose this somehow should be fixed to be autodetected / added automagically )
