Many thanks for the tip. I've finally managed to install the mainline kernel. However, it does not solve the problem, or, to be specific, regenerates an old one: I can login now, but X stops abruptly without warning, showing a black screen with the following message: "the screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly". I can only log back in safe graphics mode, and all session data is lost. I had previously filed that same behavior here in launchpad under bug #579653, before I experienced bug #586090 (this one we're working on). Since a proposed solution for bug #579653 was also to install the mainline kernel, I'll file the results there too. Thanks again.
