I tried the radeon driver again today (I've had to switch to fglrx, although it has memory leaks and makes the splash on booting ugly): then after starting flightgear, and alt-tab-ing to another window the same cycles of partly-corrupted screen to blank screen started. I then tried the xorg-edgers-drivers-only repo, and trying to hibernate on that started the corruption immediately, i.e. the system didn't hibernate, but stayed on and became useless.
