Never mind, I figured this out by changing my approach. I loaded an
older version CD of Ubuntu 9.10 and selected the memory test.

I ended up about 61,000 errors from the memory. So I had my wife's older
computer and changed their RAM chips and started again with a memory
test, not one megging error showed up. bummer.

I guess this fixes the memory issue. now to re-try and re-do the
installation for mesa.
