I might also add that I am seeing the same thing with the nouveau driver and subpixel hinting enabled, and when I switch to the closed nvidia driver I'm not sure how to describe it but in openoffice and gvim I am seeing blocky font corruption when subpixel hinting is enabled. If I switch back to best contrast, everything returns to normal. See attached screen shots.
