Ok, I think the 2.6.32-19.28 kernel fixes the problem. I've run three or four days, and no crashes. Everything looks much better.
You can close out the bug as appropriate. I'll post a comment on the upstream intel bug tracker too. In relation to normal Ubuntu releases, is it expected that 10.04 LTS final will ship with this kernel, or some other (newer?) kernel that includes these fixes?
