OK, you're right; it appears that something on the client side is beating the tar out of Xorg. I switched to a virtual terminal (where top very strangely claimed that IT was taking over an entire core), killed several of the last-launched processes, and was able to get a clean, flicker-free desktop. I'm posting this from Firefox running in Lucid Lynx.
So the trick now is to figure out which client is evil, and presumably reassign this bug.
