@Marius: Your problem is definitely not the same problem as this one. It sounds like your problem might be more like bug #542950 - perhaps you could have a look at what's been done there and try it out?
@Bernie: So the nvidia binary drivers don't work properly on your laptop in Karmic, either? That's rather odd!
