Unless Bryce found something amiss in the logs I attached, I thought I should add that it dawned on me I was using the Mozilla build of Firefox.
I'd installed it using the Ubuntuzilla repo: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ubuntuzilla/index.php?title=Main_Page#Installation After reverting to the Ubuntu build I've not been able to duplicate the aforementioned "freeze". I'll not change the status just yet but I will follow up.
