One more thing: You write in bug 528491 that using the patches from https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24789#c38 helps on Karmic. Have you tested this on Lucid? There is a patch at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26746#c10 which may be doing something similar. Could you try that?
