Alternatively, you can use a 2.6.33 kernel from the kernel PPA http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
and the packages from xorg-edgers PPA. https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa to have overlay support on karmic or lucid.
