I have the same problem with 9.10. My system is a Dell Latitude d400. On lid close, I get a black screen with an immobile white cursor. No key combo (ctrl+alt+f1, fn+f8) allows recovery.
If I suspend the machine before closing the lid, on opening the login screen comes up appropriately.
