** Description changed: Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils After switching to some video mode and back (as this harware/video test does), the whole display becomes and remains completely garbled. Vertical lines flash in colors usually related to what should be displayed; the rest of the system works, screen updates occur normally, ie a new dialog will translate into "more gray stuff" spread over the monitor. The monitor (DVI) syncs properly and well (no delay etc) at the expected resolution and refresh rate. Powercycling it has no effect. The garbled content shifts dramatically in position and color (large black areas appear and disappear) in response to mouse movements, like if the cursor was dragging it at all times. Switching ptys via Ctrl-Alt-F<n> works but the consoles all look solid grey area with few black vertical lines. Attempting to restart the X-server didn't work (but I might have fat-fingered something); reboot proceeds normally and restores proper operation. The same behavior was very rarely observed in intrepid as well, after screen-saver/locker ran. The machine's "marketing name" is Dell Optiplex 745. ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 CheckboxCommand: xrandr_cycle CheckboxData: Screen permanently garbled; system otherwise operational. Reboot required to restore operation.
