No such luck for me. Using the standard kernel (2.6.31-17-generic), I replaced xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 with 4:2.8.0.901+karmic from Brian Rogers PPA and booted with nolapic and nomodeset. My laptop froze within a minute.
