This affects my Dell Dimension 2400 also. P4 3.06 D-HT, 2GB Ram, Radeon 5250, was duel booting XP, 9.04 ext4.
New install boots Karmic fine but minutes to a hour later freezes, requiring a hard boot. I gave up and reverted, that was fun too with the beta grub. Jaunty is a keeper for now I use this puter daily.
