This isn't an Dell E6500 only problem. I'm running on X61 ThinkPad. And have same problem when docking/undocking as fubarbundy wrote on 2009-10-08, and have used same solution (although it doesn't resolve icons on desktop): - when the gnome theme dies (falls back to unthemed, Windows 95ish appearance), attempting to change settings in gnome-display-properties has no effect, UNTIL gnome-appearance-properties is run, which also restores the current theme.
