For the record (if it helps) I have the same problem blank screen after logging in (Gnome fails, Failsafe Gnome works). I have an ATI graphics card (not NVidia). I performed an upgrade (from 9.04 - 9.10) and was surprised that my login screen was "altered" to the Xubuntu screen after the upgrade. I had installed xcfe about back when I was using Gutsy. Am currently trying to uninstall all things compiz to see if it helps...will try to keep posting results.
