fglrx + [either modified x-server] = [memory leak] + [good window opening] radeon + [karmic current x-server (2:1.6.4-2ubuntu4)] = [no memory leak] + [good 2D effects] I have not tested radeon + [modified x-server]. The driver is leaking memory, and in my case it's leaking it quite badly.
