I can confirm that on downgrading xserver-common, xserver-xorg-core, and xserver-xorg-legacy to ubuntu1.2 versions, the game works fine, so it's definitely due to the new security update. Unfortunately I can't afford to have an unpatched X server running. I'm happy to help out in debugging in any way possible though!
