Public bug reported:

Found a bug and a solution. Using two screens, a laptopt with a built in
display and a secondary display. If the Dock is set to "Show on" extenal
display X.org usually crashes to login screen (all gui applications
gone) when external display is disconnected or laptop goes to sleep and
connected to a new display.

The sollution that worked for me is to reset the dock placement back to
Built-in display. "Seetings -> Ubuntu Desktop -> Dock -> Show on" and
then choose "1. Built-in display". Other options seems to crash window
manager.
