Problem remains, under 9.04, on Dell's E6500 notebook.  I'm looking for
solutions and workarounds.

I'll try disabling compiz per tuXzero's recommendation above (thanks,
dude!)  and I'll try "xrandr" as well if needed.

If neither works I'll be back, looking to find whoever's in charge of
"testing against karmic" so we can get this re-opened and worked on.
