I am also having a very similar problem on my Dell Inspiron 5390 runnin
ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. The output from running xinput reads:
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ DELL091F:00 27C6:01F0 Mouse id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ DELL091F:00 27C6:01F0 Touchpad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Integrated_Webcam_HD: Integrate id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Intel HID events id=12 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Intel HID 5 button array id=13 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Dell WMI hotkeys id=14 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=15 [slave keyboard (3)]
After booting the laptop up I have no problems with the touchpad, I also
noticed that after a cold boot if i run "xinput test 11" and "xinput
test 10" only device 11 (touchpad) registers any inputs. However, once i
suspend the laptop and then wake it the touchpad loses lots of functions
(basically functions like a mouse no gestures work) and right click also
becomes middle click. If i again run both of the xinput tests again the
only device that registers inputs is now device ID 10 (the one labelled
mouse)
