Could login into Recovery mode and created etc/X11/xorg.conf with contents:....

Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
...As indicated in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome
Now lubuntu runs with 1024x768 resolution
