When you think Wayland is being used by accident, please run:

  xrandr > newxrandr.txt

and send us the file 'newxrandr.txt'.

Also, the correct setting to disable Wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
is:

  WaylandEnable=false

and is not:

  WaylandEnabled=False
