Christopher, I am currently running Ubuntu 17.10 64 bit, Mate 1.18.0, kernel 4.13.0-30-generic X86_64. I have not seen this problem for a long time and it's so long ago now I'm afraid that I don't recall whether it occurred after an update. I have attached current Xorg log.
I am also running Ubuntu 18.04 in Vbox and not seeing the issue.
