In Gnome Shell, try this (worked for me):

Install package 'gnome-tweak-tool' and run it ("Tweak Tool"). Then try the 
different options in:
Keyboard & Mouse > Touchpad > Click Method

I found the default of "Default" didn't work. But changing it to
"Fingers" does.
