Hi Christopher, Thanks for your prompt reply. I downloaded xenial-dexktop-amd64.iso dated 07-Jan-2016 08:56 and booted from USB.
It took me directly to the desktop, so I didn't test on the login screen. On the desktop, external mouse and touchscreen work as expected. The trackpad is unresponsive. In unity-control-center->all settings->Mouse & Trackpad I tried toggling the touchpad off and on. No effect. The Samsung ativ book 9 pro has a trackpad-on/off function key (Fn-F5). Also no effect.
