thank you for your reply. I have updated the BIOS with what appeared to
be the newest version available from Dell.

I now get
> sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

I did not experience any freeze for a short while (one full day, while
my laptop was plugged into power). Today, while my laptop was running on
battery power I experienced the first freeze since the BIOS upgrade.

It appears identical to what I used to have before upgrade (i.e. not
only the laptop does not respond, to keyboard/trackpad, but the screen
displays some strange pattern, cfr. the image attached to my first bug
report).
