Hi Christoph, thank you for your help so far and for the helpful pointers to the ubuntu help pages. Unfortunately, the ASUS website does not provide the new BIOS directly but only indirectly in the form of a windows installer. I sent them an email asking for the BIOS separately. However, I doubt that this would solve the problem. I experience the exact same problem on a different computer at work (a Thinkpad T450S) which is also running xubuntu. I'll try updating the BIOS anyway and keep you updated about the success.
