Well, apparently there are several problems in suspend/resume, or it is
one bug which comes up under certain timing or other circumstances ...
Since it took me quite a while to try all of the described workarounds,
including the internal graphics unit, switching off one CPU for the
suspend / resume cycle, different drivers, explicitly shutting down
peripherals, etc. ... I want to share the solution I found:
ATI card with the propietary fglrx driver, compiz / special effects: OFF
Everything else hung the machine on suspend, or a little bit afterwards.
