This seems to be happening to me also on 14.04, GeForce 6600 AGP, Nouveau. I'm now going to try and add "nomodeset" to my kernel options and see if that helps (as suggested here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/205021/how-to-solve-gpu-lockup-switching- to-software-fbcon-on-new-install-of-12-10)
