this is happening to me with ubuntu 14.10 on an Acer laptop. I thought it was related to firefox usage and switching to chrome gave me abuot 5 days relief from the problem. but it just happened to me this morning. switching to tty1 and then back to Unity didn't help. I got the stock orange background image after briefly seeing the unlock screen, and then my desktop apps. mouse still moved, but nothing seemed to work. I do run google hangouts to be in contact with work and it continued to stream. I could hear the office and they can see me.
