I get the exact same issue using my Lenovo LT1421 Displaylink screen. This has happened for ages and is not new to 14.x or a recent kernel, randr, xorg whatever. Tried it all.
Once i get the monitor up and working with the correct modelines the mouse pointer on my main screen routinely flickers.
