Wow.. I totally didn't expect this. It actually IS working again with in the 14.04 Trusty
It seems the reason why it's not crashing anymore is this snippet from the xorg logfile MACH64(0): Direct rendering is not supported for ATI chips earlier than the ATI 3D Rage Pro.
