Many Windows viruses are exploiting features of MS Office or MS Outlook; if you wish to check your files for viruses, you can use ClamAV to scan them. ClamAV's definitions are, of course, not perfect, like any other AV definitions; but if your files past muster, it ought to be safe enough to open them in LibreOffice.
