I performed a fresh install of 13.10 64-bit on my Dell E6520, and was running into this freeze issue at the login screen or even shortly after logging in. Eventually, a terminal like screen would appear with nouveau error messages. Much like comment #46 above, I was able to do the following:
1) Opened Virtual Terminal, using <ctrl>+<alt>+F3 2) Logged in at the prompt 3) sudo apt-get install nvidia-319 (which is the latest version that I can see) During the nvidia driver download and install, my display would switch back to either the frozen login screen or the black screen with the stream of nouveau errors. I would just hit <ctrl>+<alt>+F3 again to continue watching the installation process. Once the install was finished, I rebooted, using the command: sudo reboot. I did not remove nouveau. It's only been about 8 hours, but I haven't hit the freeze issue again yet... fingers crossed. I'm attaching the nouveau messages grep'd from my syslog, in case it helps. ** Attachment added: "nouveau.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451/+attachment/3923911/+files/nouveau.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1184451 Title: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
