I had the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 7720 with integrated Intell HD 4000 with Ubuntu 13.04. Downloading and installing Intel graphics installer from https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/2013/intelr-linux- graphics-installer-version-1.0.2 and then updating the drivers fixed the problem. Now i enjoy Cairo. Please check for the most updated intell drivers, this may fix it for you.
